To ensure a range of small and large communities had the opportunity to be part of Pick My Project, no more than 50 per cent of a regional partnership areas funding was awarded to one local government area (LGA). As a result this project was unsuccessful.

The State Government's new "Road Smart" program is a road safety education and training program designed to build on the existing road knowledge, skills and behaviours of Year 10 (or equivalent) students. The program aims to help lay down the foundations for safe driving among young drivers. To host the program, a hard-surfaced vehicle handling area that meets the program's guidelines is required. There is currently no such dedicated area available in the Geelong region. The Geelong Traffic Safety Centre (GTSC) is the obvious place to build one but the GTSC needs funds to do so.
Red P-plate drivers are twice as likely to have an accident as drivers with 4 or more years of experience. A greater awareness of road safety in our young drivers will help reduce the horror of road trauma currently experienced by too many of them. Year 10 students throughout the Geelong region will benefit from the State Government-funded "Road Smart" program if there is a suitable facility available to host the program. Established in 1983 by the State Government, the GTSC needs an injection of funds to improve its facilities to allow it to host the "Road Smart" program.
