We plan to deliver multiple “Umbrella Dementia Cafés” in our local community houses for people living at home with dementia, their carers and their family. Our Umbrella Dementia Cafés model provides a safe and encouraging social environment, where people can meet others in a similar situation, share ideas, support one another through their experiences and take part in lifestyle specific activities. Cafés also provide access to dementia specific information and appropriate local community referrals and services. Volunteers from the community houses will have specialist training to facilitate the cafés, empower choice within the group and foster inclusive connections.

The Umbrella Dementia Cafés model will benefit the community by delivering café events while achieving key priorities:
• Connect and re-socialise people with dementia to themselves, family and community,
• Deliver person-centred, culturally appropriate, human rights-oriented programs,
• Train volunteers, empower advocacy and attract to workforce,
• Provide dementia research, information, professionals and resources,
• Raise public awareness towards de-stigmatisation through fundraising, health promotion and events,
• Develop more cafés in other communities to create sustainability.

An absolutely amazing community program that engages people with dementia, their carers and the wider community. Facilitated by the passionate and wonderful Kirsty and a dedicated team of volunteers. As someone with close family members impacted by this disease (as a sufferer and carer) this incredible community offering has been invaluable to our family unit. Caring, supportive....it is hard to put the tangible benefits it delivers into words. Such a worthy nominee - not just for the charity as a stand alone unit...but all it assists.

Such an amazing initiative within our community that is so important in supporting our people with Dementia and their careers but is also helping shift stereotypes and stigma about the disease by including primary schools and community members as volunteers and leaders. Run by the remarkable woman Kirsty who has the vision and passion to take this important project nationally. Good luck UDC! You deserve all the good fortune in the world!
