Our Pick my Project idea is to bring a positive, uplifting vibe back into the Korumburra and South Gippsland communities, during the long dull days of winter.
Korumburra, nestled in in the green rolling hills, is the gateway to South Gippsland. We would love to create a welcoming display of "Southern Lights" as we light up the trees and buildings along the 3km stretch of highway that run's through Korumburra.
We can envisage that our project could be extended to other towns located along the highway through South Gippsland to truly become Victoria's Southern Lights.
We often talk about "The Winter Blues" but Seasonal Effective Disorder is real for many people and unfortunately Mental Health issues are statistically higher in rural communities like South Gippsland.
Creating The Southern Lights with a Festival Event will encourage people to embrace the cold, get out to socialise and connect with others.
Our Project will strengthen the towns economic development by using local trades for the installation etc.
We will be lighting the way for visitors and tourists to come to Korumburra so they can discover that Korumburra and South Gippsland as so much more to offer.

What a great way to light up our lovely town
A great way to put a smile on your face and bring sparkle to lives.
A bright beacon for South Gippy.
Great work, great for the town
Brilliant idea; Brilliant name.
Our beautiful bubbly community would be even more lovely with these beautiful lights! I think it is a great way to get people outside with a coat, hat and scarf in winter.
It looks very pretty and would be a wonderful project but for three factors. 1. Has the cost of removing and reinstalling the lighting from the trees on a yearly basis , so the electrical cords don't ring bark the trees (as happened to the Plane trees in King Street Melbourne a few years ago) been budgeted for in the costs ? 2. If the South Gippsland Shire can't afford o pay the electricity bill for the spotlight on the Lennie Gwyther statue in Leongatha, for how long will they be willing to foot the bill for this lighting after the grant money has run out ?. 3. How many days / weeks will it be until the local yobs vandalise the lighting just as they vandlased the Christmas decorations ? Nonetheless, I live in hope and will vote for the lighting anyway.
Hi Libby, the project was submitted as the beginning of an idea.
1. The image was created to visualise this idea. The lights may be fitted to buildings and not the trees, but the image had to represent the concept.
2. The budget allows for electricity consumption.
Regardless, this is a town project, not a South Gippsland Shire project.
3. If we put vandals at the front of every idea or project, nothing in this world would happen.
Staying positive that we will make it to the next stage.
Fabulous idea
Excellent Project to light up our town
What a great idea lights always bring a smile and the kids love them
Fantastic idea, who doesn't like fairy lights!!! Another attraction for our growing township.
I think it's a fantastic idea and something Korumburra can be widely known for. Anything that promotes our town has to be a good thing.!!
Perhaps clear signage to indicate parking at rear of shops for the visitors that aren't familier with that additional parking available.
Need one hour parking in street people stay too long
And should more job
Get new foot path. And shop open no
Coffee
this would be a fantastic addition to the already increasing tourism aspect of Korumburra during the winter months, there have been several new businesses recently opened which encourage evening socialising... Burra Brewery & Borough Dept Store...the lights would add a festival atmosphere...
