The Latrobe City has been highlighted as having significant disadvantages including mental health problems and above average state and national rates of suicide. We aim to provide 31 X 3.5 hr Teen Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) education sessions to approximately 1500 year levels 8 & 11 across the 3 secondary schools in the Latrobe Valley. Youth MHFA would be provided to teachers, parents and community members. The training will be used to increase the volume of students, parents, teachers and community members trained in early identification of mental health problems facing our young people in particular.

Mental health problems often start in adolescence or early childhood and it’s important that problems are detected early. We aim to reduce mental health problems and suicide in our community, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and increase social inclusion. MHFA training provides students with the opportunity to learn about signs and symptoms of mental health problems, how and where to get help. YMHFA for teachers, parents, and other interested community members will equip them with the skills to recognise and respond to mental health problems early. Our secondary schools are not funded to deliver this education but keen to implement it.

As our teenagers are finding their place in the world, give them the skills to deal with the pressure, both from their peers, from cultural expectations and from Year 12 studies.

This is a vital program for our young people as early identification of mental health issues, is so important Can’t believe it’s not a mandatory part of the ciriculum.
