The Merri Creek is an iconic natural feature of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Through the prisms of sustainability and indigenous culture, ‘Learning for the Future: Children and the Merri Creek’ activates the community's experience of place through innovative art and science events by award-winning local artists and science collectives. As well as offering the community a unique celebration of place while promoting our connection to the environment and empowering the younger generations of today in making Moreland a better place for all forms of life to flourish.

How can we help our children prepare to deal with Australia’s past and uncertain future? Integrating indigenous knowledge, art and science, this is a year long learning project offering over one hundred school and public workshops to children and adults in Moreland. Public events will be held across three hubs, each connected with a different circle of the community: Moreland Primary School, East Coburg Community House and Merri Creek. The project will be welcoming to all, oriented toward life-long learning and sustained over a long period to allow deeper community connections and shared, hands on learning experiences.

Dear all, thanks so much for your voting and your generous comments in this page. Our local community is very excited about our project, and so are we. By bringing Wurundjeri knowledge, art and science together at a local community scale seem we aim to make Moreland a better place for all forms of life to flourish! Last week we made this awesome video in Merri Creek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvCmoRYczNE Please feel free to share!

Connecting our kids to their local environment through Merri Creek; giving them an understanding of the local indigenous knowledge and history; allowing them to express this through art and encouraging them to ask questions and solve problems through science, is a wonderful way to develop them as individuals and to feel connected as a community. It's a great way for us all in Moreland to learn to care for our Merri Creek and to create a sense of belonging, as well as a hopeful approach to solving the larger problems we face as a society.

A real jewel of open area SO close to heavily populated areas. A boon for children who may not regularly experience nature

Thanks, Francisk! also, our program will not only happen at school. Parallel to the school program there will be a public program called "Wanderings along the creek" that will be free and open to the community at East Coburg Community House, AND really interesting public events as well!

This is a great project, building on an abundance of evidence that well being is strongly correlated with connectedness to nature and sense of place. Inspiring to see science and art connecting too!

Yes, Fiona! We are inspired as well. We believe that having Wurundjeri knowledge, arts and science together in a process-oriented program for children at Moreland Primary School, and to the wider community at East Coburg Community House will certainly contribute to our sense of place, and wellbeing of all forms of living! Thanks for your support :)
