The project is to update the existing lighting at HMHC to the international standard of 500 LUX. Project will use existing poles and wires and will benefit all users of the centre. In particular the TEM and Hawthorn Hockey Clubs who have approx 1200 members aged 7 to 75 of both genders in broadly similar numbers. This represents approx 10% of the registered hockey players in Melbourne. All users will benefit from upgraded lighting, particularly during winter when most training and many games are played in the evenings/nighttime. Currently the lighting is very uneven creating shadows which is undesirable.
The project will benefit the local community with:
-improved safety and vision for players, umpires and coaches
-improved viewing for spectators
-better directional focus of lights meaning reduced impact on neighbours
-LED lights are far more energy efficient than the current lights leading to reduced greenhouse emissions
-Hawthorn and TEM Premier League teams playing night games at home rather than 3rd party venues
-reduced ground hire costs for TEM and Hawthorn Hockey Clubs
-new lighting technology will reduce the maintenance and electricity costs associated with managing the hockey centre reducing the financial burden on Hawthorn and TEM hockey clubs.

On most weekdays during the hockey season this facility is used well into the night for both competition and training purposes. Improved lighting has potential to greatly benefit the tenant clubs, visiting clubs, the many schools that use the facility and other periodic users who host hockey games and workshops on the pitches.
For example; this venue hosted the 2018 Men's Senior Country Hockey Championship over three days in June.

This facility is heavily used by host clubs and visiting teams across Melbourne and Victoria. lower cost to run lighting will be of benefit to all of us. Lower greenhouse emissions, less call on peak power.. Less need for maintenance. Better lighting levels for safer play. Focused light reduces light pollution byproduct effects on our neighbours. Win=Win

The grounds are used constantly, and a logging upgrade will allow a longer usage. With the current lighting some games cannot be played in poor light or in the evening due to safety

Safety is paramount and whilst already playing under the flood lights, having lighting meeting hockey standards will be safer for all, whilst also making the facility meet Hockey Victoria to hold other games outside of the schools/clubs who already use the facility.
