Matthew Harding, renowned steel, stone and wood sculptor has an extraordinary body of work in Australia and overseas. Tragically, Matthew ended his life on 22 February 2018. Local residents, with the support of Matthew’s partner Freya, have decided to develop a community art installation in the Trent Creek Reserve, Trentham where Matthew lived and worked. The key objectives of this project are: • To ensure that Matthew Harding’s artistic legacy is not only recognised around Australia and overseas but also in his home town, Trentham. • To raise awareness of the high rate of suicide among men in regional areas.

This project will provide a ‘contemplative space’ for people to remember and celebrate Matthew Harding’s life and work.

In addition, it will serve as a ‘healing space’ for Matthew’s extensive network of friends to grieve their loss and to contemplate the mental health needs of so many people, and in particular, men in regional areas.

And finally, the installation will be an ongoing confirmation to Matthew’s partner and four children of the Trentham community’s respect and pride in their partner and father, respectively.

This project means a great deal to our town. The opportunity to honour Matt - one of our local treasures - and to have his work displayed in pride of place, so that he is remembered always.

I think it's important to remember the incredible contribution of Matthew and to continue to raise awareness about metal health in our community.

Yes. I think this is a fitting tribute to a great man. One of Marks Sculptures is also in Blackwood. Wilbur the weed. Wilbur the weed does in fact take pride of place in Blackwoods Easter carnival parade. Mark donated Wilbur to Blackwood Barrie’s Reef Landcare Group to promote awareness of the need to eradicate introduced weeds and plant local indigenous species. People travelling through the area will be able to see both of these wonderful sculptures. Marks sculpture will also add to the arts culture of our area. We need to be proud of and celebrate Marks magnificent work.

Matt Harding was a great loss not only to the community but the art world in general. This memorial will honor his contribution as an artist, a father, and a friend. What a wonderful tribute for our town that had great respect for this man and his family, not only as an artistic genius but a wonderful human being.

I didn’t know Matt personally but always admired his incredible artwork and was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of passing. This project would be such a wonderful thing for his family and community and for the rest of Victoria too to remember a wonderfully talented artist.

Lifts the spirit and grounds the soul! Bringing Mathew's genius to light in a permanent installation will be appreciated by the Trentham community and all those who visit our lovely town.
There cannot be too many reminders of the importance of nurturing mental health in us all.
