Currently all food waste is transported and processed outside of Apollo Bay, which can be costly and have an impact on the environment. This project offers a solution by purchasing a commercial sized closed loop unit, which turns food waste into compost, a resource for the local community to purchase and potential employment within the town. The unit will be located in Apollo Bay. The unit will be will be made available to the community and offer a great opportunity for education on closed waste systems.

The project offers an environmentally beneficial outcomes for the disposal of food waste, which is currently transported out of Apollo Bay to be processed. Food waste is only going to increase moving forward.

The project benefits the community overall as;
- it offers local solution/facility to reduce food waste by up to 90 percent, thus reducing greenhouse gases and environmental impacts.
- reduces the need to transport waste for disposal
- produces a local resource (compost)
- Offers educational opportunities for community on closed loop waste systems
- Possibility to offer ongoing local employment opportunities to run the compost

I've worked a little bit with Steve from Closed Loop organics and used four of the smaller CLOeys. We were composting the daily waste of up to 40 people with ease. And the larger systems look fantastic. If these could be linked to a small solar or wind power source, they would be a brilliant way to turn waste into a useful product very quickly.

Great idea and a good group who will drive this to success if funded.

This is a great concept, like the Degraves Recycling Facility in Melbourne which appears to be working effectively.

Why can't the food scraps be fed to Roderick's pigs? Bit of a waste just turning them into compost

Ewith the amount of food waste from restaurants, hotels, cafes being 60-70% of all their waste and homes, you would need a lot of pigs. More than Roderick has. Also how healthy for pigs.
Pigs can't be feed meat either, under legislation of some kind, which would require commercial business to seperate meat from food waste which would be timely and unpleasant for staff.
This is great idea. Considering our number of food business and homes. Better still if provides.employment.

Have a piggery up piggery lane, as a community biodigestor. Pigs would not be for human consumption. Compost poo instead, and feed food scraps to animals. Otherwise, it's not full utilisation of a resource.

My chickens love meat and hunt mice and eat them. I don't eat my chickens though.

Poo is better in making hot compost too. It really shouldn't be put in water and made into sewerage 😔 Imagine if we fully utilised poo

We MUST protect our environment. Small communities like ours can be leaders in addressing problems relating to waste disposal.
