YouthSwimTeach will target young people, 16 years to 25 years including youth who identify as being indigenous. Physical health and education data for Ballarat youth show inadequate levels of exercise and lower levels of education including early school leaving (compared with the Victorian average) as key issues for this age group. Aligned with the Council’s Youth plans this project will strengthen participants’ opportunities and skill bases while offering a positive, healthy vocational training environment. Expected outcomes include training and qualifying with an AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence that will significantly enhance employment possibilities, employment choices and a sound career pathway.

This project will strengthen community from the outset during the networking, engagement and collaboration in the voting phase. Participating in the AUSTSWIM course and post course in water training YouthSwimTeach will address priority areas of the Regional City’s Health and Wellbeing plan (and that of the Central Highlands Region) by increasing active living and has the potential to improve mental health and to reduce aquatic related injury. Increasing the knowledge, skills and understanding of the participating youth will enable them to be job ready and will offer them meaningful work where they will truly make a difference.
