Tick bites can lead to a variety of illnesses including bacterial infections, Borrelia (Lyme), Rickettsia, allergies, paralysis, autoimmune diseases, and multi-systemic disorders. Considered among the fastest growing diseases worldwide, most Victorians know very little about them and prevention is vital.

If not treated early, tick-borne illnesses become chronic, debilitating, complex and difficult to treat. The Tick-borne Illness Community Network Australia hopes to prevent others from becoming long suffering patients by developing a series of community education talks, raising media and public awareness.

We will partner with the Australian Patients Association who will assist with media, advocacy and community awareness programs.

What are Tick Talks?

TICNA volunteers will travel throughout Victoria presenting free Tick Talks to diverse community groups, clubs, sporting associations, local councils, and anyone who simply loves the great Australian outdoor way of life.

We will deliver talks and disseminate information, however, there are many parts of regional Victorian communities we won’t be able to cover, due to the need for more resources and volunteers. Raising media and creating targeted community awareness campaigns will help us spread the word about tick-borne diseases and save many from potential long-term suffering and a life of pain.

Sadly such infections can be very debilitating, and yet largely ignored by the medical systems. The costs to the people of Australia are enormous. Over 600,000 Australians are suspected to be infected from bites from ticks and other vectors.
Since these infections are associated with MS, Alzheimer's Disease, Arthritis, Motor Neurone Disease, stroke, heart attacks and many more then it is very important that the general public be made aware of them, and also urgent research should be done on treatment protocols.
