Developing yet another 'app' is a weak response to the overwhelming epidemic of unhealthy eating. Lasting change happens through experience. Open a community garden and kitchen. Partner with cafes to provide cooking and food preparation workshops. You really expect youth to change long-held habits by downloading an app? Just seems like an unoriginal and lazy way of outsourcing the problem. Let them experience amazing food and the health it brings first hand. Engage their senses, connect with them face to face.

Young Foodie Game is a community health education initiative that aims to solve the problem of unhealthy eating among young people. The project will develop a cooking game and an interactive mobile app featuring healthy recipes, food trivia and tips to engage young people to cook and learn about food in their homes-all while having fun with their friends! This game will be available from the project website, through community service agencies and local health stores and cafes in Camberwell, and later promoted and available for the wider Victorian community.
Almost one in four evening meals in Australia are prepared outside the home (Sensis, 2009). Cooking has become a lost life skill among young people due to the easy access to pre-cooked meals, busy and time-poor family households, dining out trend and lack of knowledge and food preparation skills. The game will improve food literacy and cooking skills among 20-24 year olds who comprise the largest age group in Camberwell; promote healthy food habits, self management of diet especially in youth living with a chronic condition, avoid diet related health issues such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and eating disorders.

Thank you Leah for sharing your views about our project. Community gardens and kitchen gardens already operate within schools and communities and they are doing a fantastic job in educating children and people about food and nutrition. Our project specifically targets a lifestyle group of older teenagers and young people in middle twenties - these people are often students or young professionals at the start of their career with minimal funds and time. We know they do like to spend recreational time with their friends. Our game will incorporate technology but it is not only an app - it is a physical game that provides a challenge for young people to learn about cooking and good nutrition while spending time with their friends. Thanks again for your feedback, Sonakshi
This is a fabulous project which will develop an educational resource on nutrition for young people. Nutrition is top of mind for young people living with inflammatory bowel disease as they can easily become malnourished when they are unwell and need support to develop a personalised nutritional plan that helps to reduce symptoms and provide the necessary, essential nutrients for their bodies.

Any assistance to help people living with IBD is welcome. What could be better than learning how to prepare fresh, wholesome food in attractive ways.
