Celebrated professional conductor Angus Christie will direct the Warrnambool Symphony Orchestra and special guest players in the first performance of acclaimed Warrnambool composer Ken Stott's new, four movement Symphony Number 1. Music lovers throughout the region will enjoy this latest work, which follows other highly acclaimed recent Stott compositions including his cantata "The Day is Ended," for orchestra, soloists and 80 voice choir, which has had four well supported performances in Hamilton and Warrnambool in recent years. Based on The Passion, the symphony will be performed in the lead up to Easter 2019 at Warrnambool's Christ Church.
Orchestral players benefit from playing newly composed music. Their technical skills are challenged and enhanced by the experience. Audiences enjoy hearing new music, especially works written specifically for local players by local and regional composers. This was demonstrated in 2017 when the WSO premièred eight new such works written especially for it, to a packed and enthusiastic house. The well-being of the whole region is enhanced by a diverse, healthy, vibrant and active arts community. The maintenance and enhancement of the arts builds community capacity and adds to the livability and reputation of the city and the region.
