The Cradle is a mesmerising, wind-driven kinetic sculpture by regional Victorian artist Alex Sanson and sets the tone to develop a sculpture trail across the region. We are working closely with Shire Council, local artists, community arts and recreational groups on the project. Part of the creation of the new work invites community groups to participate in building the ‘people’ figures who represent the villages of the shire, while ensuring quality control of the artwork outcome. This brings diverse local interest groups together to work collectively toward a common project goal and to increase the tourism economy of the Pyrenees.

The forthcoming Beaufort Western Highway bypass will remove traffic from the center of Beaufort, including valuable tourists. The project positions Beaufort as a gateway to our unique beautiful region. Workshops bring the community together stimulating creative thinking, and fosters local identity as an ‘arty town’. The Apprenticeship Program mentors young people in professional public art concept development, fabrication and installation. Documentation of the creative process creates free online sculpture Master Classes. Ultimately the project promotes the delights of the Pyrenees environment, new technologies, and celebrates the transformation of a desolate block to the beginning of a new vibrant arts precinct.

Thank you Edmond. If you see below in the response to Maurice, the reasoning behind the proposed project site's location is summarised. A lot of consideration was given for this project to work in harmony with a number of different local plans for Beaufort and the Pyrenees.

I think a lot of thought has to go into where to place this art. It needs to be in a very very visual location where the maximum exposure will be achieved. Although down by the railway line is near to the Art Gallery and will help develop an " Art Precinct " , it is a bit off the beaten track.

Great feedback Maurice. The proposed site was chosen in consideration of Lawrence Street being a new gateway route to Beaufort after the future Bypass; the Pyrenees Futures Plan Place Activation( Arts Precinct); the Beaufort Walkability Plan; and being a Bypass Ready town. You are right - at the moment the potential site feels off the beaten track. but a big part of the project is to create a new arts destination for locals and tourists to enjoy, through extensive site works and landscaping and connect with Beaufort through pathways.

Thank you. We think this will be the only permanent outdoor wind driven kinetic sculpture in Victoria.
