McAuley Community Services for Women (McAuley) provides accommodation, services, advocacy and support to women and their accompanying children who have experienced family violence and/or homelessness.
A key pillar of the McAuley model is the Skills for Life program designed to foster women’s independent living skills and social inclusion. Included in this program is Food for Life.
Food for Life operates out of McAuley's level 3 commercial kitchen with adjoining courtyard. We would love to create a kitchen-garden program; growing edible plants that can be utilised by McAuley residents, and enjoyed in their community lunches and kitchen-garden program workshops.
The kitchen-garden project will build the capacity for women who have an experience of family violence and/or homelessness, to regain and sustain their independence. Further, it will create benefits for our whole community including: Reducing instances of recurrent homelessness; the creation of a space for activities and strengthening of social bonds; generating volunteer opportunities; and promoting educational opportunities about the benefits of sustainable living.
