The network of bike shelters will be located at each of the 3 local schools and one at the start of the future Rail Trail. They will form the hub of a safe travel network for students and community members to ride, walk and scoot safely around the township, then store their bike or scooter in a safe, sheltered space. Users will then link with local bus networks and get access to public transport options to travel into Melbourne, including the coming Mernda Rail station. This will assist with the issues of isolation facing residents in Whittlesea township.

Whittlesea township is part of the LGA with the highest heart attack risk in the state. This project will get people onto bikes, walking and getting out and about to improve their health outcomes. The project will spark interest in health and activity and encourage the residents to pursue existing healthy support and education options in the community. It will link in with the existing bike programs at the Library, Community House and Primary School. The benefits will be felt from the youngest users in prams up to local elderly or disabled residents on mobility scooters and walking supports.
