The Wodonga Wheelchair Basketball Program will provide an opportunity for Community Members of Wodonga and surrounds to participate in introductory wheelchair basketball sessions. (1.) To support and expand on the weekly come and try sessions that currently run out of the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre. (2.) Run sessions for organisations to raise awareness e.g. corporate businesses/schools. By participating in these sessions the program hopes to raise awareness and emphasise the importance of inclusion and accessibility for people with a disability or impairment in sport and recreation activities.
The Wodonga Wheelchair Basketball Program will provide opportunities as well as raise awareness of wheelchair basketball and its benefits to improving the quality of life for people with a physical disability or injury. It will also target people who don't traditionally play basketball or may have stopped mainstream basketball due to age or injury. The wider community are generally not exposed to the sport of wheelchair basketball and therefore the majority of people still think that you have to be permanently in a wheelchair to play wheelchair basketball. We hope to facilitate social change to increase wheelchair basketball in Wodonga.
