Fairfield is changing fast, with new residents arriving every day. My idea is to hold informal conversation circles (over tea and food) to get to know our neighbours’ names and stories, so we can strengthen connections between residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Street ‘leaders’ will organise small circles in their chosen location – maybe their garden, apartment rooftop or under their favourite street tree! Leaders within a 60m radius of Fairfield Station will be supported to coordinate circles, build connection and collect quality neighbourhood stories. A Facebook page, ‘Stories of Fairfield’ will collate stories to further strengthen neighbourhood identity.

We’re all hearing that social connection is one of the most important things for health, however neighbourhoods are feeling increasingly disconnected, and it’s often hard to take the first step to talk with our neighbours. Breaking down barriers between neighbours of all ages and backgrounds establishes strong neighbourhood foundations leading to improved health and better community outcomes (including decreased crime). Through this supported format the conversation circles will be constructive and accessible to all residents, and begin a ‘ripple effect’ of connection across the community. The Facebook page will help build wider neighbourhood identity and potentially assist with Council planning.

Street by street have been working on this type of thing as has Streetbank Australia. Could be good to connect with them to see who else in your area would be keen to connect and build this project.
