Bees are in trouble around the world but we desperately need them. Bees are responsible for 1 in every 3 bites of food we eat. I’d like Pollinator Alliance to deliver bee education to kids and set up a local Bee Shed with resources and workshops. My project will: Teach 50 local schools (over 2,500 kids) about the importance of bees. Create a Bee Shed at Melbourne Innovation Centre, Alphington. Provide low cost beekeeping tools, resources and workshops at Bee Shed for backyard beekeepers. Educate residents about locally produced food in partnership with Melbourne Farmer’s Markets.

By teaching kids about bees and supporting backyard beekeepers we will:
Raise awareness about how bees are disappearing and the important role they play in our food supply.
Support bee friendly gardens.
Achieve better pollination of fruit and vegetables.
Increase participation in our local food economy through Farmer’s Markets.
Encourage kids and families to spend more time outdoors.
Create a community space at Bee Shed where people can come together and connect.
Reduce waste by providing access to resources that beekeepers may only need to use a few times a year.
Advocate for our environment, food security and bees.

I grew up with bee hives in the back garden in suburban Melbourne. Such an important initiative!

This is marvellous. I work in a school garden program and would love to introduce bees into the garden, but there a a few hurdles . This at least gives the children a close encounter and ideas about the importance of bees in our environment.
