A survey of the Wonthaggi Cemetery has identified 411 veterans of WW1 and WW2 buried in the cemetery; eleven veterans were prisoners of War. The Church of England and Roman Catholic sections are yet to be surveyed and the this is expected to double the numbers of identified graves. Some 40% of graves identified so far are unmarked and difficult to find. This project will provide easy public access to the location of a veteran's grave. The project will complete the survey and build a memorial providing details of the veteran and the location of their grave.

The primary benefit to the community of Wonthaggi and Bass Coast is ready identification of the grave locations which is now difficult without expert help because of the poor quality and state of the cemetery records. Many Wonthaggi families still retain a very close connection to family members who were veterans and are buried at Wonthaggi. This project will provide them with certainty and ready access to the grave locations. The memorial will provide a point of reflection for ongoing Remembrance services and it will provide a public resource for the strong genealogy and historical societies for ancestral research.

A great project that will respect the legacy of those how served

An important memorial that would help the decendants of war veterans and all of us to remember and respect the legacy of these local young men. I'm sure that many volunteer hours have already gone into researching this project, and it seems there is still more to do. It would also contribute to making the cemetery a meaningful place to visit for those if us that have been fortunate enough to not have to live through a war.
