This project will create a new pocket of natural beauty on an unused section of land along the Moonee Ponds Creek. It will allow the land to become publicly accessible and create an ‘urban honeybee hub’. Revegetation with native flowering species will be undertaken; flowhives installed and an eco-friendly hut built. Social interaction will be encouraged with community gatherings, workshops and honey harvesting days. The Honeybee Hub will foster friendships and enhance awareness and connectedness with the Creek. The project will be a collaboration between residents, Moreland Council, Melbourne Water, Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek and The Practical Beekeeper.

This project will give our community the unique opportunity to relax amongst native flora and reflect on the contribution to a rehabilitated creek. Beekeeper training will enable our community to care for resident bees and harvest honey. Ongoing construction of medium-high density living in our local area highlights the need to increase opportunities for people to connect with open space, nature and each other. The Honeybee Hub will provide such an opportunity. Community planting days will strengthen our connections with each other and the creek environment. Honey harvest days will allow us to enjoy the delights of locally-produced honey!

Yes! This most def is a killer (but not killer bee!) idea! Wow!... Yes! As the mudbrick-guy (the PmP @ Brunswick North West P.S), I've both heard excitement for this project AND directed people to your site! Woooot! (also - who knows - but maybe your 'eco-friendly hut' may be built out of mud? Mud is totes eco friendly! Haha! And the whole community builds it! ...Just a thought?)

Using flowhives seems like a bit of a waste. Some bees dont take to them and then they're just left empty.

I’m looking forward to giving them a go and very thankful to have the wonderful Practical Beekeeper guide us.

We need to attract bees to the area for future generations. Growing up in Brunswick West in the 1940’s through to the 1960’s I remember Moonee Ponds Creek as it was originally. I spent many years of fun with my brothers and friends playing along the banks of the creek.

Let’s hope we can do our part to help return the creek to its former glory. I’d love to hear your stories when we have the chance to meet.

Love the look of the design and this would open up an otherwise wasted bit of the creek side land. Great job Jo!

Great idea! The whole area needs a load more honeybees. Even if you don’t like honey too much, you need the fruit and veggies that need the bees to fertilise their flowers.
