The project has two parts that will run at the same time.
1) To encourage locals to identify unused spaces. We are looking for spare rooms, bungalows and granny flats that can be upgraded to usable accommodation for those in insecure housing. We will hold an "open house display" at a vacant office that we plan to renovate. Local residents, tradesmen and real estate agents will be invited to participate and we encourage trade displays and networking. Health and safety issues will be highlighted,
2. The conversion of the vacant office for low income accommodation.

Welfare groups have identified 100 homeless people and 300 people in insecure housing around Portland. Encouraging locals to see their unused spaces as assets and to consider dual occupancy or converting and upgrading bungalows and granny flats will decrease the housing waiting list and increase the income of the land owners and possibly of local builders and real estate agents. The office conversion will provide low income secure housing.

What an excellent but simple idea! It’s so hard to find affordable housing nowadays and the situation is getting to crisis point. As a community we have an opportunity to make a difference by providing a basic human need

Homelessness is one of our most serious social issues. It affects people of all ages and gender. Not enough is being done to address this problem and this project would be a great start to helping people in need.

It is a key need in our community, and I applaud the people who have instigated this project. As a worker in this field I see the lack of affordable housing everyday, and indeed the lack of any housing options for many people. How we care for our poor and outcast, indicates the type and quality of community we are, so this is a wonderful project for all of us in Portland to support.
