Disadvantaged Drill Hall affordable housing tenants - many with disabilities and impaired mobility - live in a densely populated neighbourhood near Victoria Market.

They need a safe, accessible, outdoor place with facilities for recreational activities such as gardening, gatherings, celebrations, BBQ's etc and for individual relaxation and contemplation - their own nearby 'backyard' place.

This should also be an accessible public place, open to all local residents, the homeless clients of the adjacent Cohealth agency and the public in general (e.g. tourists staying at hotels in the area) thus ensuring wider social inclusion and diversity.

In short, an accessible public/community park.

Council has continuously supported and partnered the Drill Hall Residents Association (DHRA)'s initiative to develop this neglected space as a local community garden/public park since 2013.

The space is planned to be accessible (firm paving), a place of event, gathering and celebration (accessible BBQ) and for leisure, contemplation, recreation and cultivation/recycling (garden, worm farms, wicking planter boxes).

The local Victoria Square Precinct Committee, (formed in 2013 by DHRA) comprising the Council, Multicultural Hub, Cohealth, Housing Choices Australia and DHRA, acts as a clearing house for project ideas and involvement and will ensure that local community and public objectives are fulfilled.

Its a neglected area with great potential, hopefully it can be gracefully transformed into a safe, clean and user friendly space.

I walk past this space every day and it desperately requires improvement. It is highly visible to tourists and should be converted into an area of pride for City workers and local community.

An outdoor green space would be wonderful for the residents and this area.
