The SUBSTATION is a 100-year-old electrical substation that was renovated into an arts space in the 1990s. This project will improve amenity and community enjoyment of The SUBSTATION through cleaning up of disused area, landscaping of surrounds, introduction of passive recreation areas and appropriate architectural lighting. Our goal is to extend our welcome to the community and allow residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoor spaces. The focus on access will extend to the provision of bicycle lock-up areas and ammenities for families within the landscaped areas.
The SUBSTATION is the only contemporary arts space in Melbourne's inner west, presenting an annual curated program of multi-artform including music, dance, theatre and visual art. The SUBSTATION's gallery has free entry and concession prices are offered to all local residents of Hobsons Bay for ticketed events. Since January 2016, The SUBSTATION has seen audiences of over 150,000, with 30% of audiences coming from the west of Melbourne and 30% of repeat ticket buyers residing within 5km. These much-needed upgrades will improve accessibility and visibility of The SUBSTATION within the local community to promote attendance to The SUBSTATION's artistic program.

Inspiring people, incredible programming, and fantastic building - badly in need of an upgrade though. This place can compete with any independent arts venue in Melbourne, it’s more than worth the investment to keep Newport on the map.

The substation is such an amazing space and when it first opened it had art shows , Markets,a pop up cafe and some great live shows etc. A lot of that has since disappeared which is a great shame.
An expansion in this area would be beneficial to all.

The revival of the Substation was a great initiative to enhance Arts accessibility in the West. Improving the surrounding enironment will mean further community engagement with the space and the Arts which would be wonderful!

Wonderful, innovative adaptive reuse of a local heritage treasure. Fabulous program of arts events and a brilliant catalyst and showcase for the West. The building needs some help - especially in relationship to the exterior spaces and landscape - improvements will also enhance the wider civic context and connection to other community facilities.
