Large amounts of waste generated by hospitals goes to landfill and incinerators. This includes significant amounts of unused medical supplies and equipment. The Medical Pantry Program is a solution to reduce the amount of hospital waste by recovering these unused items. We collect used items from hospitals located in the Western Metropolitan Region (Footscray, Sunshine, Williamstown and Sunbury Hospitals). We sort, package and store these items in our warehouse (requires Pick My Project Funds) and donate the supplies to medically underserved communities, wildlife sanctuaries and local businesses. Highly specialised medical supplies are donated to medical relief groups.
Medical Pantry Program is not just about donating medical supplies to medically underserved communities, wildlife sanctuaries and local businesses, it improves the sustainability of our community by reducing the hospitals contribution to landfill and carbon foot print. The program involves volunteers of numerous backgrounds, including local nurses, doctors, students, young professionals and retirees and promote health and welfare to help build stronger, more diverse and connected community.

I'd love to know why hospitals are throwing away unused stuff!
Hi Deef, that is a great question. In our health care system, unfortunately, there are many reasons why supplies are thrown out. Here are some reasons why:
-New techniques and new equipment which means the old stock is not used and cannot be returned;
-Items are ordered specifically for a patient who no longer requires the intervention;
-There is no process to redirect supplies and the only option is to throw it into landfill;
-The manufacturers do not accept returns.
