The coming back out ball is a way for people who have suffered abuse and isolation for most of their lives to celebrate who they are and to feel special about being LGBTQI instead of feeling persecuted. The joy I saw on the faces of older men and women from the gay community last year was so uplifting. It really needs to happen again.

The Coming Back Out Ball is a long-term social transformation project that addresses ageism, homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia and transphobia. Working in collaboration with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex elders (65+), this project empowers a diverse community to assert their social agency, creativity and value within an ageist paradigm. The Coming Back Out Ball will result in a spectacular social and cultural event, presented in Melbourne for Victorian LGBTI elders (and their allies) to attend. The event will be free for LGBTI elders 65+; and include delicious three course meal, drinks, and entertainment by leading LGBTI performers. www.comingbackoutball.com
Inspired by research revealing that some LGBTI elders conceal their sexual orientation or gender identity when they access aged care services – because they believe they are not safe. For this generation, the first to fight for equality, impending old age may mean going back into the closet, or the risk of being deprived companionship or quality care when they need it most.
This project considers the significant issue of social isolation and loneness plaguing elderly populations; which is even more acute for LGBTI older people. The Coming Back Out Ball proudly builds inclusivity while transforming embedded social injustices.

The Coming Back Out Ball was truly an inspirational night for the LGBTIQ seniors community in 2017 and it will be great to be able to go again to enjoy the entertainment and food and company in 2018.
The Coming Back Out Ball was my most inspiring, uplifting night of 2017. The quality, the care, the volunteers and the love in the town hall was a great antidote to the political mire of the same sex marriage vote fiasco!
The Coming Back Out Ball 2017 was an extraordinarily vibrant event, so well organised and researched, one of the best events I've ever attended. As one of the performers at that event, we were treated like royalty, and I thank the organisers handsomely for this. I'm so looking forward to the Coming Back Out Ball 2018!
Wonderful that friends of mine are able to 'come out' and enjoy aspects of their lives denied them by an ignorant society for decades (and more).
A great project supporting LGBTI Elders!

Truly a significant contribution to the LGBTIQ + story. What an honour to be part of something that contributes to the mental and physical wellbeing of those trailblazers who have made such a difference to my life as a gay man and that it can be celebrated in such a fabulously conspicuous way. So much respect and gratitude .
