Meandering through paddocks and urban bushland, The Birrarung Discovery Trail will share Indigenous knowledge and sustainable farming practices with the wider community.

Every year, thousands of children will explore the trail through educational tours that teach sustainability, Indigenous knowledge and environmental awareness.

The trail will become a learning hub for all farm visitors; a place to connect with nature and with the river that gave our city life. The trail will bring the farm experience into the paddocks and provide a space where the Wurundjeri people can share their knowledge, stories and culture with the wider community.

The Birrarung Discovery Trail will acknowledge the role of the Wurundjeri in managing and modifying the land we now call Collingwood Children’s Farm. It provides a community education hub where all farm users, adult and children alike, can learn about First Nations history, culture and knowledge.

The project build process will engage children with special needs and at-risk young people. It will teach invaluable work-related skills and foster a sense of place amongst a student cohort that faces significant barriers to future employment. These barriers include intellectual disabilities, mental illness, trauma backgrounds, substance abuse, behaviour disorders and school refusal.

This project will offer an essential insight into First Nations history, culture and knowledge. It will increase our understanding of this precious landscape and the deeper cultural history of this special place. I like that it's pitching education to young and old, and embraces those who are often marginalised.
