The Bayside Backyard Bee Project will commence with an introductory information session on 'Beekeeping in the suburbs'. A 'bee friendly' plant will be available for the first 100 participants who register (and attend) the information session.

Participants will be able to apply for one of twenty 'Backyard Beekeeper' packages. The package will include a beehive, colony, safety equipment and additional support and mentoring through access to an experienced beekeeper and the 'Bayside Beekeeping Community'.

An estimated 30% of our food production, and most of our favourite garden plants are dependent on the pollination provided by bees, however these hardworking little creatures are increasingly under threat from pesticides and loss of habitat.

The Bayside Backyard Bee Project will provide residents the opportunity to give bees and other local wildlife a helping hand through the distribution of 100 'bee friendly' pollinator plants, and support to establish 20 new Backyard Beekeepers.

Bayside residents will make connections through a shared interest and build their own 'Beekeeping community' as they improve the health of their neighbourhood environment.

A great article in The Age about the important work of bees. Who knew 4.2 billion of them are transported along the east coast to pollinate almond trees?!

We all understand the importance of bees, and we should do everything to promote their presence even in suburban areas. Their presence will do wonders to residents’ gardens, which will then attract birds and butterflies as well.

Thanks for comment and support - increasing their numbers will only bring good things and we hope this project will give people the knowledge to get the best out of their hives :)

I like this idea. Would this only be for people in Beaumaris, or Bayside Council? And what process and costs do you propose to select the lucky 20?

Thanks for your query - and apologies for the late reply. Participation would not be restricted to Beaumaris residents alone. Bayside residents are welcome to attend the public information session which would be filled on a 'first in, best dressed' basis. The details for selection of hive recipients are yet to be finalised but Bayside residents could also apply. Keep in mind you don't need to live in the area to vote for a project you just need to have a connection to that community.
Thanks for your interest!

We have had hives in beaumaris and they were brilliant. We relocated them to the coast during a renovation and they were stolen!! Many people have often contacted my husband about how to do bee keeping and would like to try it. It's wonderful. Great project

This is great local initiative for Beaumaris and Bayside. Bee populations are under threat from pesticides and parasites. But they are essential for pollination of our plants including many of our primary crops.

We'd love to host some bees on our property.

This is a very worthy project for the community and the Victorian government to support.

What a great initiative for Beaumaris we need to encourage bees back to our suburbs. What a beautiful way for our children to learn about bees and honey. It might encourage more residents to plant bee attracting trees and shrubs. We would love to welcome a hive to our natural garden.
