‘Snuggle Boxes’ is a social enterprise initiative developed by teen mums currently completing their schooling with the support of Swinburne’s Young Mums Program. While carrying out the important role of mothering, this project will empower teen mums to develop new skills establishing a business as part of completing their education. Teen mums will design and create a range of wellness products using organic/natural ingredients to sell. Students will learn business management, retail merchandising, OH&S, teamwork and communication skills. This program will give deserving teen mums the opportunity to experience running a business in a hands-on, supportive and ongoing learning environment.

Research shows that supporting teen mums to complete their education reduces welfare dependency in the community. Without support to complete their education, teen mums are often lost in a cycle of inter-generational poverty and disadvantage. ‘Snuggle Boxes’ will be developed by teen mums, re-engaging them to complete their education while teaching them invaluable real-life skills to set them up for employment in the future and the ability to support their young families. As teen mums often struggle with isolation and separation from peers, this program also aims to promote positive self-confidence, leadership, teamwork and provide a valuable support network.

Through education, these young mums will make a great impact on their own lives, and be great role models for their children. Go girls!

I have had the opportunity to meet these young women and they are incredible. Their determination to be great mums, to get qualifications, and to run a successful venture that supports other younger mums is inspirational. They are such an asset and the program is fantastic.
