Our project is for residents of the Rural City of Wangaratta and Alpine & Indigo Shires interested in undertaking European Wasp control.
Community members will attend local information sessions & register their site as a control point. Two control approaches will be undertaken- Spring; Queen trapping/lure & Autumn; Nest baiting.
Support personnel will provide equipment, training and assist in site set-up, mapping and collating results/observations.
We will produce a European Wasp brochure for wider distribution; general overview, life cycle, habitat & control options.
Products used will not impact bees, do not require chemical users certificate and are domestic waste disposable.

Our project will work with scientists & a Victorian owned/operated company to provide the latest research, project support, equipment and training in best practice control methods for European Wasps.

Locally, European Wasp are;
*in high numbers across our project area.
*a major health & safety problem.
*impacting on tourism, especially during peak times of Christmas, Easter & Labour Day holidays.
*damaging ripening fruit including grapes, pome & stone fruits.
*a hazard to fruit pickers, agricultural workers.
*troublesome during outdoor recreational activities.
*predators of native pollinators and honey bees.

Our project is empowering local communities to work together.

Last summer was the first time I have spotted these pests on my land. My efforts to erradicate them failed, I've seen the occasional wasp on warm days during the Winter. I'm in an isolated location and hope to be included in the program.

I think it is a major problem. It is quiet at the moment but they are still around. Get a fine day and they about.

Hi Dianne, yes they are a major problem in our area.
This time of the year and the colder months they are dormant, you will find queens "over wintering" in snug places awaiting for warmer weather when they begin to form new colonies and nests. Come spring, around November and we all know about them.

Thanks for the feedback Sarjay65. Climatic conditions plays a large part in the number of wasps each summer and this year we may see an increase in numbers due to the dryer winter. Our project will be setting up programs in all the townships (16) across the 3 shires.
Thanks for your interest and we would love you to spread the word and get more votes. Gayle

A great idea! Recreational spaces should be funded by council (they certainly take our money for it) but there’s no funding for something like this and it needs to be a whole community approach!

Hi Vicka, our program is designed to grid each town and strategically set up stations. This way we are hoping to blanket cover all the the public recreational areas with out being in the public space. We are keeping all 3 councils informed of our project and the roll out if successful. Thanks for your support.
