St Michaels Primary Ashburton is launching an initiative to become a Sustainability/ Resource Smart School. As part of this we intend to establish a Community Garden accessible to not only our school, but also the local Ashburton Community and others beyond. The Garden is to include a Food Forest, Vegetable Gardens and chicken run, the enjoyment and produce of which would be available to all. These Garden areas, as well as providing a lush green space, can serve as very public instructive examples of sustainability in action, and encourage and educate the broader community of the benefits of sustainable living.

Seeing sustainable practices in action, and sharing in their success is a fabulous way to engage and educate. Sustainability is something we all need to take more seriously. By seeing, having access to, and enjoying produce from the St Michaels Sustainability Community Garden, the Ashburton community can both enjoy and become better informed about what is involved in sustainability and how we can all work to make a difference in our world. St Michaels intends to very publicly share the learnings of our Sustainability journey and involve the Community in it, as well as the garden produce from it!

What a fantastic initiative. Children gain so much satisfaction from growing food and then being able to reap the benefits of what they have sown! Tackles so many childhood issues - sustainability, obesity, connections with nature...
Well done!
