The building at the Stella Maris Seafarers' Centre at 600 Little Collins St, Melbourne is in urgent need of an internal lift. The Centre provides a home-away-from-home to all seafarers regardless of colour, race or creed. The facility is also utilised by other community groups, however as a not-for-profit organisation it is not always possible to find funds to maintain the building both externally and internally. This project is to install a lift making access possible for injured seafarers, permanent tenants & elderly patrons to the Centre. The only access is currently two flights of stairs.

The Centre services the seafaring community when in the Port of Melbourne. The Centre is also utilised by groups for other community gatherings including Anzac Day celebrations, Veteran Group meetings, seafarer accommodation & permanent tenancy. Funding for upgrades remains difficult & dependent on fund raising events or donations. The installation of a lift will allow all patrons to enjoy the facilities and benefit all who utilise the Centre making it accessible to all, especially those unable to use stairs through either injury or disability. It is a Health & Safety issue requiring urgent attention.

The hall hosts other Associations of elderly and disabled folk who find the staircase very difficult to negotiate

I am aware that merchant seamen lead lonely, difficult and often dangerous lives. Injuries are frequent so a lift at Stella Maris will be a great help to injured visiting seafarers.

The Centre has looked after seafarers entering the Port of Melbourne for many years. Stella Maris does a wonderful job looking after seafarers regardless of race, religion or creed. The lift project is a very worthwhile cause for Stella Maris.
