The labyrinth will complement other resources within the school environment to promote social and emotional health for students, staff and parents. Engagement and wellbeing staff, teachers, support staff and our therapeutic play therapist will utilise the classic designed labyrinth during school hours to support individual and small-groups of children to return to a state of calmness that is conducive to positive engagement in learning and social development. Staff and students at Arthur Mawson Children’s Centre and the Shepparton English language Centre would have access. There is potential for parents involved in programs offered by our Community Hub.

Georges Rd Primary School services a low socio-economic school community. 50% of families are from non-English speaking backgrounds, 10% comprising new arrival refugees predominantly from middle-eastern countries. 20% of students are indigenous with 30% from Anglo-Saxon families. Our demographic combines to form a richly divers, but nonetheless, disadvantaged school community. A regular school paediatric clinic has identified significant numbers of children who have suffered early childhood trauma, resulting in significant setbacks to social development and educational achievement. The need for therapeutic intervention far exceeds the school’s ability to supply support.

A great idea Enza. The labyrinth provides a beautifully calming space where we can get to know ourselves and our community better. It can be used in a huge number of applications in the school setting from improving concentration to productive time out to conflict resolution. Lisa S

I have used a labyrinth in the past with students and it has been very helpful to students and their wellbeing. This would be fantastic for the students at St. George’s Road Primary School!
