The Veggie Spot is a community garden on busy Lygon St in Brunswick East with plots managed by community members, local restaurants and 3000acres. Together we garden, share harvests and learn new skills.

To attract more people into our garden, and share our enthusiasm for growing food in the inner-suburbs we would like to throw a Spring Fling Festival in the garden. This weekend long event would involve gardening workshops, presentations by urban food groups, live music and food sharing. People can come to learn new skills, celebrate the start of Spring and meet others from their local community.

Many people who visit our garden don’t have the opportunity to grow food elsewhere - they live in apartments. We provide a space for them to learn how to do so, as well as worm farms for them to dispose of their organic waste sustainably. As part of this grant, we would like to add another worm farm to process more waste and run workshops across the year which are available to the community to learn about urban food and sustainability. Most of all, we would like the Spring Fling to bring people together and inspire them about local food.

This is a fantastic project. I have been to a couple of the workshops and they have been very informative and fun with great speakers. I think it's so important when living in the city to be able to still have that connection to nature , it's not that I'm a hippie, but I grew up in the country and I love to get my hands dirty, get planting and see so many people enjoying the results.
