Early next year Violet Town will pause to remember the Southern Aurora train crash and the nine people who died just south of the town fifty years ago. As a permanent reminder of this tragedy, a reflective garden of solace and healing is being created. Integral to this will be a reflective sculpture symbolising the selfless volunteering for which Violet Town is known. Hundreds of locals were involved at the accident with the memorial acknowledging this effort. It will also reflect the compassion, kindness and universal human values that makes Violet Town such a generous, inclusive and vibrant rural community.
Our sculpture (like that of Weary Dunlop’s) will be a permanent reminder of the importance of caring and respect both in times of disaster and in our everyday lives. It will acknowledge and commemorate Violet Town community’s contribution at the time of the accident as well as today and will emphasise the importance of all voluntary organisations. As people visit the memorial they will not only support the local economy, they will contemplate on the strength of Australian rural and regional communities and ensure Violet Town becomes a focal point for reflection on human dignity, compassion, resilience and generosity.

Such a worthy project as the ONLY memorial for this tragic disaster is one lowly rock with a plaque on it and a park bench at the location of the accident. (McDiarmids Road railway crossing).
Please support a major commemorative project
This was a huge tragic incident which unfortunately has gone un-noticed for many years, it is only now the community has banded together to commemorate the event and build a memorial to recognise the lives lost and the courage's effort of all volunteers involved.
Today such a wealth of information is being discovered about the Tragic Southern Aurora tragic train smash. There are wonderful plans to communicate this story using a variety of exciting mediums. Individuals, our community and visitors to Violet Town shall be uplifted by these intricate stories.

Violet Town has been built by volunteers and the Southern Aurora accident proved no different. Virtually the entire town came together instantly to volunteer and help the injured passengers and to comfort the friends and families of deceased and injured. The men fought the fire and helped free passengers whilst the ladies provided refreshments and comfort. Local businesses opened their hearts and stores to give generously. This memorial project is a reflection on the townsfolk who tirelessly worked so hard well into the night to help others, and also a remembrance and tribute to the deceased from this terrible accident. This in essence is what Violet Town is all about - helping each other.
For locals of school age at the time of the accident this sculpture will also be a place of reflection on the generation of locals who have now passed on who were involved after the accident.

An important memorial not only for those injured or killed but for the tremendous community spirit that was shown by those who came to lend a helping hand. This will honour the volunteers from the many agencies that came from far and wide.
