SEMVAC is a council of Vietnamese associations in South Eastern Melbourne.

Our volunteer-staffed SEMVAC Helps service helped 500+ people in its first year, 2017. Demand is exceeding our volunteers' capacity. We need to employ staff.

We will introduce SEMVAC Life Skills, a series of classes or seminars delivered by experts: classes on computer skills, applying for citizenship; seminars on health topics (cooking, dental, bone), family violence, gambling, and accessing government services.

To be sustainable, we must apply for grants and deal with their reporting requirements, plus improve our fundraising effectiveness. Employing staff helps us do this.

There are thousands of Vietnamese, mostly seniors, who are disadvantaged simply because they cannot learn English. They are our main target.

PEOPLE USING OUR SERVICES BENEFIT BY:

- citizenship classes: having their individual questions answered,
- computer classes: knowing how to avoid scams and viruses, being able to use social networks,
- life skills seminars (videos livestreamed and put online so that people who cannot attend can benefit): learning how to look after their health, which government services are available and how to access them, how to deal with gambling, violence, drug problems in their family.

Language barrier is one of the biggest drawback for immigrants with limited English capability, which can greatly affect their mental well-being . It's great to know that there are organisations out there who are willing to help out.
It's difficult enough for the average Australians to get assistance to manage hardships let alone people with language barriers.
Well done for setting up this project and good luck. I wish you every success.

SEMVAC 's free community service does make significant impact on the lives of disadvantage people who received its assistance. Running entirely by volunteers, it deserves some help to continues the great works.
