SCOOT, is a mobility scooter, with a ‘book box library’ (a train) trailer and supported by a team of ‘Literacy Champions’ who will create a mobile ‘story time’ for Heathcote and District’s children.
As well as hearing a story in a fun environment, children will be given a free book to take home. Parents will also receive information on other activities and programs available.
SCOOT, and his team, will make weekly appearances at various locations throughout Heathcote, including playgroup, preschool, schools, cafes and local playgrounds. SCOOT, will also be available for appearances at the monthly market and community events.
Heathcote has one the highest percentage (17%) of children with delayed literacy and language development in Victoria. Although attempts have been made by different groups and organisations to encourage parents and community to take their children along to various language and literacy activities and programs there has been lack of interest.
So, SCOOT the story train, together with his team of trained ‘Literacy Champions’ will take story time’ to the children, in an effort to demonstrate reading is fun and at the same time try bringing our literacy and language level in line with the state average of 6.3%.

This is a fabulous idea ....we hope Kiwanis can be involved supplying book boxes and books
Our pre-0school age literacy is low in Heathcote . This project will attract attention and encourage reading.
This project makes literacy fun - and it demonstrates that literacy the responsibility of the whole community, not just schools and homes.
This is a great project which will help encourage kids to read more. Reading is a basic skill which we all need to develop and achieve our potential
