This is a much loved area off our school environment, by children and adults. It would be amazing if it was an all weather area. At this time of the year it becomes off limits, as it is very wet and unsuitable for the students to visit safely.

We are planning to expand the capability of our existing school farm to primarily support programs where children with social and emotional challenges can engage with learning in and out of the classroom environment. This all weather all ability learning environment would become a focal calming area within our school for all members of our school community, parents, children and staff to utilise. By tapping into existing school initiatives in sustainability the farm will also be seen as a working model of how sustainability practices can be practicably applied in a real world setting.
By creating a focal point for children, parents and staff, this project aims to strengthen and in some cases establish links between and across all groups within our school community in the area of social inclusion and mental health. Our school can also model desirable environmental sustainability and waste practices, providing an opportunity to draw upon the expertise and enthusiasm of the existing school community and to develop future community leaders.

Our school farm is a fabulous resource we have at our school and with some support, funding and TLC we can really expand the options and make a sustainable, educational, community based environment for our students and families. Our sons love the farm at their school and it provides them with an abundance of experiences, life skills, education based learning as well as commitment, responsibility and pride.
Schools are important places for kids to learn in a fun way, how to grow their own food. This is a well located garden, already with some infrastructure. Families happily tend animals during holidays on a roster system. Food waste is recycled. Well worth adding to this valuable resource.

We need to start thinking outside the square of the four walls of a classroom when it comes to nurturing our children. The concept of a classroom needs to be broadened to include outdoor learning areas. By doing this, we are opening up opportunities to incorporate learning into practical projects and enhance relationships between teachers, students and community. For my daughter, the school farm at Portland North served not only as an enjoyable, safe space to escape from the sometimes stressful confines of the classroom, but was a place of acceptance both by the animals she handled and the other students who were drawn there. Funding to provide an all-weather outdoor learning area to get maximum benefit from this facility is an investment into the lives of those who attend the school.
