This project will build a sand surfaced equestrian area. This area would be used as multi functional area (dressage, show jumping, games and Harness dressage). The sand area will transform an underutilised area of the local recreation reserve and provide a safe practice and competition space for our equine partners and the many, mainly female, participants of the sport. Our aim is to create an equestrian hub open to the many riders of all ages and abilities in Gippsland to train and compete in a safe environment. There is currently no public, (not-for-profit), facilities of this nature in our region.
Nowa Nowa is a small community in East Gippsland that is centrally located to the region. Many riders in our region are from smaller farming communities and cannot afford the cost of travel to larger centres to train and compete at purpose-built facilities such as this.
Whilst Nowa Nowa is centrally located to our region, our township is considered remote. Our aim is to attract more visitors to the area, not only benefitting our township, but providing an economic boost to the local business community across the region that riders travel through on their way to the facilities.

Have to agree with the majority commenting on this project as a positive outcome for Nowa Nowa and East Gippsland. The sand arena's could be used for so much more than just horse activities, including games of beach soccer, cricket and volleyball to name a few. Looking at the plans show the project sponsors have left plenty of open space at the reserve to hold other activities. Well done and great idea.

Great Idea.
I’m sure not only the ponies will appreciate the softer surface.
Can see this space being used by school groups etc for activities such as athletics, volley ball. will bring a lot more new activity opportunists while also maintinaing flexibility for all the exiting activities taking place regularly at the grounds.

This proposal is not good for the community of Nowa Nowa. It would render the Recreation Reserve useless for any other activity. No more social games of football or cricket. No room for future plans to bring back the wood chops, the introduction of sheep dog trials or a swap meet. When the Reserve Floods the sand will be spread all over the property next door. NOT A GOOD IDEA AT ALL.

This project would be of amazing benefit to Nowa Nowa and the larger surrounding area of East Gippsland. It would be very much appreciated and well utilised by the equestrian community as we are sadly lacking in equestrian facilities in East Gippsland generally.

Great idea - would love a purpose built indoor equestrian facility for Bairnsdale as well.
It will not be an indoor arena, it is open to the elements. Had the proposal been a multipurpose indoor arena it would have got my vote.

What about when it floods
It has not flooded on the oval only x country

1998 flood water measured at 1.5 m at the canteen. 2007 flood water measured 30 cm at the canteen. 2011 flood water measured 10 cm at the canteen.
2011 was the only recent flood that did not encroach onto the oval proper.
