The "Melville" Carriage was originally built as State Car "Alexandra" for the 1901 visit of Prince George, Duke of Cornwall and York, and the Duchess. After the royal visit, the carriage was modernised, had end platforms added, and was given a new name. Since then, she has been used for many purposes including the Train of Knowledge, a mobile radio station and a train crew carriage. After many years of persistent negotiation, she has been obtained by Mornington Railway who hope to restore her to her former glory to be enjoyed "in service" by locals and visitors alike.

The "Melville" Carriage is a remarkable example of a bygone era in rail travel in Victoria. The Mornington Railway are the custodians of a unique collection of Victorian Railways rollingstock and "Melville" will be the jewel in the crown. However, she is not to be locked away hidden from view, but to be restored as a mobile showpiece and educational experience in which members of the public are welcome to participate. It is hoped that she will become an attraction in her own right, and will help to enhance the tourism offering of the Mornington Railway and the region.

What a wonderful project by an organisation run by volunteers with very little government support.
