Street trees are a feature of Maldon but there are inadequate opportunities for visitors to dispose of recyclable rubbish and the public seating is in need of restoration. A report by Tract Landscape Architects and commissioned by Mount Alexander Shire Council identified these issues as part of a wider project to restore the CBD of Maldon. The trees are being denied important nutrients as they are asphalted to the base, rubbish disposal is inadequate and currently the seats are tired looking. Maldon has been a environmental leader in the community by banning single use plastic bags in 2017.
Maintaining the health of the trees will ensure the historic Maldon streetscape will remain intact an a pleasure to visit. Recycling bins enclosed in a timber box structure is the responsible thing to do and enhances Maldon environmental credibility. The restoration of public seating will enhance the street appeal and ties into a wider streetscape project of under-grounding powerless and restoring shop fronts. Maldon is Australia's first notable town and an important intra state, interstate and international tourist destination. To ensure the town provides a pleasurable experience this environmental project is vital.

This is an essential project for the future of Maldon - to make the 'downtown area' vibrant, safe & accessible
