The project is replacing existing lights on Castlemaine Bowling Club green. The previous lights were condemned because lights and wiring were not up to standard. The lights will be replaced byThe system uses 400 watt metal halide lamps that have a light output 4 to 5 times previous lights with 80% of existing lights running costs. Existing club members will have access to lights and the community will have access for barefoot and other social bowling. Currently we have to run barefoot bowls competitions before dark limiting workers and people with families to participation.

The club currently has up to 60 female bowlers competing in barefoot bowling competitions in the summer period. Other times of the year they cannot compete because of the darkness. We have had up to 40 males participating but numbers have been limited as the playing times are about 2 months of the year and people are reluctant to come straight from work and miss out on the evening meal with their kids. With functioning lights the club could meet the growing community need for community bowls and for existing bowlers

having played under the original lighting it would certainly be a benefit to club and community to have these lights installed

Social, barefoot bowls is becoming the favoured choice of bowls. It offers a fun, social, flexible game to many who are non traditional bowlers. Most can only play in the evening after work, often after a commute from Melbourne so it is vital for Castlemaine Bowling club to have lighting on the greens to facilitate community use.
