Phase 1: Engaging local community members using creative pop-up stations as a platform to reveal their stories. This will include various forms of creative outcomes centering hair in a contemporary and traditional context.
Phase 2: Engaging both African hair and commercial hair industry practitioners through co-design workshops. Bringing together people from various cultures, creative inspirations, skills and generations.
Phase 3: Connecting communities by re-activating underutilised spaces. Results of activities in previous phases will be curated as part of a family friendly festival, inviting the wider community to enjoy the wonderful things Footscray’s hair economy and creative culture has to offer.
We are two community minded African hair and place-making practitioners, who intend to create a platform for Footscray locals to re-imagine spaces that are often neglected by redirecting positive intentions to their future use. Using hair as a creative medium, we hope to optimise the local economy by creating spaces that reveal its true value, while sparking a wider conversation about the place of African hair practices and businesses in Victoria.
