In partnership with Mallee Accommodation and Support Program (MASP), the 'red earth heart' project will purchase, fit-out and operate a van as a mobile laundry washing and drying service, and food distribution service, for homeless people. Although our primary community cohort to receive the service are homeless people or people at risk of homelessness, the red earth heart project will also reach out to those within our community who cannot afford laundry machines or food: things that many other people take for granted. MASP uses an assertive outreach model, which means they take the service anywhere to help people.
Homelessness is a significant issue for the Mildura region, with 2011 Census Data showing that 0.50% of the Mildura population is homeless (Victoria, 0.43%), that is, 257 people.
However, MASP, as a provider of support to homeless people and people at risk of homelessness, believes that in 2018 on any given night in the Mildura region, there are at least 300 people homeless.
Through providing mobile laundry and food services to homeless and other vulnerable community members, the red earth heart project will directly help and give access to improved hygiene, health and well-being outcomes for disadvantaged people.
