On the morning of September 28th, 1969, a brilliant light burst into view over the Goulburn Valley, exploded and showered fragments across the town of Murchison.
A scientific marvel – the Murchison Meteorite has since proven to be the most celebrated and studied meteorite of all time.
"As Rare as Moon Dust" will be a month-long celebration of 50 years since the landing. Events will include installation of art works depicting the impact that the discovery has had on global science, presentations from national and international experts, stargazing, book launches and the re-enactment of the Big Bang.

The commemoration will shine significant national, international and local attention to the importance and significance of the Murchison Meteorite.
It will allow experts to impart knowledge and expand understanding of the global scientific significance of the 4.6 billion year old meteorite. It will create and ignite immense local pride and provide a lasting legacy for the town that will attract on-going visitation from students, special interest groups and tourists.

It will connect the local community with nationally and internationally renowned artists and experts, inspire the younger generation in planetary science, and create lasting connections with the astrophysics fraternity.

Such a rare and fascinating meteorite, and I, like many locals, found a piece in 1969.

The 50th anniversary of the landing of the Murchison Meteorite is a really big deal to astrophysicists and scientists all over the world. Let's make it an even bigger deal! People in Shepparton, Melbourne, the rest of Victoria - the rest of Australia, don't realise the significance of this meteorite. Let's change that. Let's put Murchison on the map. Let's support events and funding to enable this to happen.

Murchison has a rare and interesting history that is largely unknown. This project will lift our towns profile and encourage tourism.
