Health and well-being program encompassing life skills – confidence, leadership, self-esteem, conflict resolution, goal setting, and nutrition. Skills are delivered through sport and fitness, specifically Olympic Boxing. Learning objectives are incorporated within the boxing lessons linking the skills taught to real life. Boxing is only a part of Punch Like a Girl program. However, it is an important and innovative tool, among others, to reach objectives of female empowerment and social change. Boxing is not necessarily the first sport that comes to mind when thinking about women’s empowerment, but boxing stresses speed and accuracy, rhythm, and good footwork.

This program is specifically targeted at disengaged girls and women, LGBTQI and CALD female participants in the Hume Region who may also be affected by low socio-economic factors. The region has a youth disengagement rate of 11.6%, and up to 14.6% of residents in areas of Hume live in social housing (ABS, 2016).
The ‘Punch Like a Girl’ program provides boxing lesson at no cost to participants, and is facilitated through local community centres and schools. The program provides a safe, comfortable, and non-judgemental environment for participants to learn a new skill.
