The Central Highlands forest is a critically endangered ecosystem (IUCN Red Listed). Wildlife of the Central Highlands (WOTCH) is a grassroots citizen science organisation with a track record of protecting valuable habitat through biodiversity surveys. “Project Spotlight” will fund citizen science surveys throughout the Central Highlands forest; a site of global ecological significance. Using state-of-the-art thermal imaging cameras and expertise of the region's biodiversity we will provide the wider community with an opportunity to extensively survey threatened-species habitat. These beloved and emblematic species include the Leadbeater’s possum, spot-tailed quoll, greater glider, yellow-bellied glider and sooty owl.

This project will benefit threatened species whose survival is dependent on the protection of these forests. Additionally, our project will serve the growing Victorian community that loves these natural places. From 4WDers to bushwalkers, mountain bikers and tourists these forests are immensely valuable. Through citizen science we will provide an opportunity for nature enthusiasts (of all ages) to be mesmerised by the awe of the forest. By empowering the local community to survey these natural places our organisation will provide a classroom in the forest. And importantly, "Project Spotlight" will facilitate community-led improvement of biodiversity knowledge and environmental management.

Some great projects in the list, though this to me is a very special one. Connecting folk to the wonderful forest on our doorstep. Already the huge hours the volunteers of WOTCH have put in have paid off massively, I may they go from strength to strength.

Our forests need protection and the more people know about it, and participate, the better.

Great idea to engage all kinds of people in environmental monitoring, and we know that is something that can only be good. It will also lead people to consider all sorts of other environmental issues as they learn about connections.

Great idea. We need to know where these amazing animals are, if we are going to protect them. Involving community makes it even better!
