This project proposes the urgent conservation of four deteriorating nationally important heritage structures on Crown land around the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse.

Since the 1850s, Point Lonsdale’s strategic geographical position resulted in the construction of vital military and maritime infrastructure (much classified by Heritage Victoria).

Given prolonged weathering, some rare structures are now at risk. Under this project, community-based specialists would work with Government agencies to preserve:
• 1889 Rocket Shed
• WW1 Searchlight Emplacement
• WW1/2 Light Direction Station
• WW2 Infra-Red ‘Magic Eye’

Support is needed to conserve this special place so future generations can experience hands-on history.

Recently the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve’s rich heritage was comprehensively investigated, revealing its remarkable contribution to Australian history over 150 years covering:
• Defence
• Shipwrecks
• Lifeboat-rescue, surf-lifesaving
• Safe navigation

Following this exciting research, a community group sought a National Heritage assessment (https://tinyurl.com/PtLonsHeritage). With strong support from the Queenscliffe Council, Community Associations, Federal-State politicians, National Trust, environmental groups & individuals, the Commonwealth shortlisted the Reserve in 2017 (https://tinyurl.com/PtLons01).

The four structures proposed for conservation reflect the goal of the local community (including the RSL and Fort Queenscliff Museum) to achieve preservation and recognition of this iconic site.

Given the heritage value and importance of the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, the environmental value of the 'green-space' land surrounding it and the degree to which both of these, together with their stature as a place that draws tourists into Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff, it is vital that this project be given a very high priority.

Area needs tidying otherwise it will just become an overgrown wilderness.

The Garrison Towns of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale have provided the primary Military security for the City of Melbourne since 1853 - those established emplacements require urgent restoration

We have such a rich heritage in defence and navigation "at the heads", it is important that this
project is progressed to ensure the preservation of the stories that extend across the three headlands,
Point Lonsdale, Point Nepean and Queenscliff, so that ultimately the site can achieve National Heritage Listing.
