Play Streets Preston

Remember playing street cricket all summer long? Our children deserve those memories too. Those memories, those friendships, and that chance to be active. Play Streets Preston will make play spaces by temporarily closing streets to through traffic once a month on Sunday afternoons so kids and parents can play outside. Pick my project will fund a trial project of three streets in Preston South in the 2018/19 summer. Working in partnership with City of Darebin, this project will demonstrate how quick and easy it is to set up play streets, so you can run one in your neighbourhood too.

It’s not just about play, it’s about community. Preston South is one of Melbourne’s most diverse suburbs. A rapidly growing area, more and more families are living in apartments. There is a growing need for informal play space and for kids to have the opportunity to play outside and meet neighbours. Play Streets provides a quick and easy solution, repurposing existing small streets which aren’t needed for through traffic on the weekends, as inclusive, community-led play spaces.
