Drysdale is about to be transformed by a Ring Road significantly affecting the traffic through the town. To ensure people come to visit we need a point of difference. Drysdale is named after a woman -Anne Drysdale was eligible to vote in 1845 making her the first woman to be able to vote in Australia - perhaps the world. Our project aims to install a statue of Anne, her farming partner Caroline Newcomb and their sheep in the centre of Drysdale, as a tourist attraction. Our community and many local groups support this project.

Drysdale has a long history and our history is our point of difference. Although our community fears that once the traffic is taken out our town may suffer but by celebrating our heritage our town will be vibrant and successful. Anne Drysdale and Caroline Newcomb were strong women who require recognition and honouring: having statues of our ladies will continue to inspire generations to come. Our community designed an art plan for the town and this is our highest priority to bring our name sake to visual reality and give visitors and residents a focal point.

It is important to recognise and acknowledge our history and celebrate the lives of those who have made a difference to our community.

This is an excellent idea and is definitely (I feel) a must for Drysdale. Not only recognition of the pioneering woman but also the significance of Anne Drysdale being the first woman allowed to vote.

Giving these two women recognition for their brave pioneering efforts in establishing farming and the community in the area would be our way of honouring them.

This is an excellent idea and I would like the Wathaurang People acknowledged as original custodians of our town with the name they used for this area. They would have been here at the same time as Anne Drysdale and Caroline Newcomb were here. Great project.

So many people are interested and excited by the story of Anne Drysdale and Caroline Newcomb. They were strong, clever, considered women who were well respected in our region and continue to be so through their names which became place names. So few women have been celebrated in such a way, for their own achievements. I continue to strive to continue my learning journey about them, about the context in which they lived and to share this with our community. This project is a way to help progress knowledge and understanding of our ladies.

What better way to celebrate and remember the pioneers of our district than to have statues of them in our main street. A wonderful talking point for both residents and people passing through. Individuals, such as these women, families and communities have all played a part in shaping the history of the Bellarine.
