Phillip Island is home to superb coast, unique wildlife and Victoria's only National Surfing Reserve. Declared in 2013, it formally recognises the outstanding surf along the Island's southern shores and celebrates our rich surfing culture and history dating back to the 1920s. The Reserve is driven by passionate surfers who view the Island’s waves and history as 'sacred'. These unique signs at each Reserve site will acknowledge the Traditional Custodians, describe the area's waves and natural and cultural values and communicate a unique 'surfer code' to inspire the next generation of surfers to share, respect and preserve this precious environment.

Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve is more than a series of places on a map. It has taken on a life of its own through the development of a surfing archive, members actively working to restore dune ecosystems and raising funds to support events including our annual Community Surfing Team Challenge where surfers of all ages and abilities unite. The Reserve also aims to support infrastructure to encourage and facilitate surfing for all ages and abilities. These signs will creatively share the wisdom of the Island's veteran surfers with current and future generations through a unique surfer and safety code.

Nice idea. Will the signage also however have pictorial information that can be understood by non English speaking folk regarding rips on our beaches? I also feel that death toll stats are also a very powerful message to convey. Each year we lose too many and signage at these surf reserve locations would be a step in the right direction.

Great initiative! Our popular surf beaches are only getting more crowded and some surf etiquette signs would be a very valuable asset, saving confrontations and surf rage. Signs would also help to regulate behaviour and keeping people of all abilities safe by providing useful information.

The NSR is a very important initiative and need all the support possible to make this new conception go to another places in AUSTRALIA and around the world... Good to know that now places with surf reserves potential can be preserved for the future generations.. promoting our culture in events and sustainability for a better world... Congratulations

We agree Ed! The Surfing Reserve is a great way to unite everyone to share, protect and celebrate Phillip Island's sacred surfing culture and world-class breaks and beaches.
